Registering with National Insurance

 
 

​Those that do not have a Social Security number must obtain one from the Department of Social Security or from the District Offices. The Department of Social Security provides its services from its Main office in 38 Ordinance Street Valletta and also from the 24 District Offices spread around the Maltese Islands (22 in Malta and 2 in Gozo).

​Applicants must bring the following documentation:

Employed Persons

  • For non-EU citizens, employment licence issued by the ETC is to be presented
  • Fill in the Social Security Number - First Time Applicants application form
  • Official means of identification such as passport
  • For non-EU citizens married to Maltese or EU nationals, a letter from the Department of Citizenship & Expatriate Affairs showing proof that applicant can work or reside freely in Malta or passport to be presented together with copy of the relative ETC engagement form

Self-employed Persons

  • For non-EU citizens, employment licence issued by the ETC is to be presented
  • For non-EU citizens married to Maltese or EU nationals – letter from the Department of Citizenship & Expatriate Affairs showing proof that applicant can work or reside freely in Malta or passport to be presented together with copy of the relative ETC engagement form

A Social Security Number is usually granted immediately. The document issued is also known as the Registration Certificate.  There are no fees due to obtain a Social Security Number.
