Migrant Health Liaison Office

The Migrant Health Liaison Office focuses on training and other services to provide the best possible support to migrants. Initiatives include:

  • Delivery of the Training programme for Cultural Mediators in Health Care

The content of the training was created by the Migrant Health Liaison Office and, to date, over a hundred participants have successfully completed the course. The training which has a duration of 5 days is for individuals who have an interest to work as cultural mediators in health.

  • Supervision and support for trained cultural mediators working in Primary Health Care

Cultural mediators need a reference point where they can discuss delicate issues related to health.  Regular meetings are held to assess sensitive situations including ethical dilemmas which they often come across in their role within health services.

  • Training for health professionals

Topics in the training include cultural competence, female genital mutilation and human trafficking and other topics related to migration and health.

  • Health education to service users on topics related to health

This includes health related topics to target groups such as mothers, families and unaccompanied minors.

  • Information to service users of health care services

A Health Orientation Programme has been developed by the Migrant Health Liaison Office for individuals who have been relocated to Malta.  The programme provides information regarding the available health services, accessibility, making an appointment, attending an appointment, documents to be provided to service providers etc.

  • Outreach services

Individuals who suffer from chronic conditions may need to be informed on a one-to-one basis on how to access a service, receive treatment or prevention of complications to best tackle their condition.
